How Consistency is the Key to Achieving Your Goals

One of the biggest issues I see people face when it comes to their health and fitness goals, business goals, social media goals, etc is lack of consistency!

Often we confuse consistency with motivation, but motivation is something that comes to us AFTER we are consistent. Consistency is the key that unlocks motivation. Consistency is the key to achieving your goals.

What do I mean by that? Let’s use working out consistently as an example. First we have to create a routine around working out.

How many times per week will we workout? (ex: 4 days, 3 days, 6 days per week) At what time of day will we press play? (ex: first thing when you wake up, during your lunch hour, right after work before dinner) What workouts will we do? (ex: 21 Day Fix at home workout plan, hire a personal trainer, sign up for gym membership and/or attend weekly group fitness classes).

Next, we have to get honest with ourselves if we are in need of extra support or accountability to follow through. You can ask your spouse, friend, coworker or fitness professional to hold you accountable and/or join you on the journey. I also want to encourage you to figure out WHY you’re doing this and why you want to become consistent in this area of your life.

Questions to meditate on:

  • Is this important to you?

  • Are you making the time for it?

  • WHY is it important to you?

  • Do you want this bad enough?

If you find yourself stopping and starting often, consider looking at which factors may be causing you to be inconsistent. How can you address those and make changes? What roadblocks can you remove?

For example, you start meal planning and meal prepping your meals instead of winging it each day so you don’t go through the fast food drive-thru. You start setting out your workout clothes the night before and pick a fitness program you can stream at home vs. driving 15 minutes to the gym, parking, signing in and waiting for a class to start when you know your schedule doesn’t have enough time to fit all of it in before work.

If you’re still struggling to be consistent with this routine, I suggest starting off small! It doesn’t have to be extreme, it doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing! If you sucked at being consistent this week, leave it in the past and focus on today. Focus on one task, maybe eating one healthy meal a day, or going for a walk twice a week. Get those quick wins and build momentum. Small changes over time = results!!

Lasty, I recommend working on your mindset around consistency, goals and habits. Consuming content from personal development professionals on whatever topic you’re struggling with can be a big help. I’ve been reading personal development books and listening to podcasts for over 10 years and they’ve positively impacted every aspect of my life for the better!
